  • Critic Reviews for The Great Raid All Critics (121) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (76) | DVD (10) While one might have wished for a better movie, and a few smarter decisions regarding the screenplay, generally it's a riveting, even inspirational account of an American feat of arms about which few know but about which many more should.

  • “The Great Raid” is an outstanding film from 2005 that tells the story of perhaps one of the most unheralded, and yet successful rescue operations in U.S. Army history. Based on a true story chronicled by Hampton Sides in his book “The Ghost Soldiers,” “The Great Raid” counts among its stars Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, and Max Martini.

  • Adapted from Breuer’s The Great Raid on Cabanatuan and Sides’ Ghost Soldiers, this film reaffirms familiar oppositions between bravery and iniquity, by way of a by-the-numbers WWII movie plot. And its representations of variously raced characters -- Japanese, the Filipinos, the Caucasians -- are careless.

  • "The Great Raid" has the look and feel of a good war movie you might see on cable late one night, perhaps starring Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan or Lee Marvin. It has been made with the confidence that the story itself is the point, not the flashy graphics.

  • The Great Raid cries out for the kind of B-movie industriousness that Dahl brought to his early, low-budget films noirs (Kill Me Again, Red Rock West and The Last Seduction), but instead it has dreams of sugarplum Oscars dancing in its head, and never stops mistaking spectacle for the truly spectacular.

  • "The Great Raid" is one such film. Based on the details of an actual rescue, as presented in William Breuer's comprehensive book "The Great Raid on Cabanatuan", and Hampton Sides' "Ghost Soldiers", "The Great Raid" is director John Dahl's portrayal of those events, executed in very broad strokes.

  • Still, when The Great Raid succeeds, it succeeds on a high level making the film worth a watch for history or drama fans looking for a solid film. Video Quality The Great Raid is presented in a 1080p High Definition 2:40:1 Widescreen Aspect Ratio.

  • The Great Raid comes across as realistic and authentic. There isn't one hero who takes on the might of the Japanese army with a broken pool cue and the Rangers aren't facing impossible odds. There isn't one hero who takes on the might of the Japanese army with a broken pool cue and the Rangers aren't facing impossible odds.

  • 'The Great Raid' is a particularly challenging film, as a good portion of it takes place at night -- particularly the final raid, which is bathed in darkness and illuminated only a few distinct points of source light.

  • The Great Raid is a 2005 war film about the Raid at Cabanatuan on the island of Luzon, Philippines during World War II. [ citation needed ] It is directed by John Dahl and stars Benjamin Bratt , James Franco , Connie Nielsen , Marton Csokas , Joseph Fiennes with Motoki Kobayashi and Cesar Montano .
