Persuasion Movie Overview

This film adaptation of Jane Austen's last novel follows Anne Elliot, the daughter of a financially troubled aristocratic family, who is persuaded to break her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a young sea captain of meager means. • When I was invited to review a new book, the premise of which, is a modern -day retelling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, I accepted immediately. But, once I’d signed on, it occurred to me that I didn’t remember any of the details of Persuasion .

  • File this under films-that-deserve-better-reviews-than-I'm-giving them. I liked it, but I just couldn't get behind it. Persuasion is a mature Jane Austen film, more subdued and grown-up than Pride ...

  • But in Persuasion, the central character scarcely speaks during some of the most important scenes. Anne Elliot, having arrived at the advanced age of 27 still a spinster, is more or less denied a role in the rigid social hierarchy of her time.

  • Persuasion is a nice novel that dealt with a variety of themes like society, class, friendship and family. I don’t think it was one of Jane Austens best books but it was an enjoyable read. I liked the main character Anne Elliot, she was a kind, gentle and intelligent woman.

  • Persuasion tells the story of Anne Elliot the daughter of Sir Walter Elliot. Her family relocates to Bath after Sir Walter's lifestyle forces him to economize (he is a foolish and vain main). While visiting her sister Mary Musgrave she is reacquainted with Frederick Wentworth a captain in the British Navy.

  • Persuasion is my favorite novel ever, and I was very much looking forward to a new adaptation of it. Trying to put aside the novel and focus on the film on it's own merits, I thought it was a fairly mediocre production that was far too rushed.

  • A tremendous amount of back-stabbing, gossiping, conniving, and manipulating is done by most characters. But Anne is a great female role model, strong in her convictions, smart, well-read, and determined to follow her heart, even if it goes against her family.

  • Persuasion at first reading was the worst of all. I was bored by the heroine Anne Elliot, and wasn't surprised to discover that even Jane Austen had said "she is too good for me".
