Testament of Youth Movie Overview

Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and remembrance, based on the First World War memoir by Vera Brittain, which has become the classic testimony of that war from a woman’s point of view. A searing journey from youthful hopes and dreams to the edge of despair and back again, it’s a film about young love, the futility of war and how to make sense of the darkest times.

  • Testament of Youth. Anchored by an extraordinary performance from actress Alicia Vikander, James Kent ’s “Testament of Youth” bears comparison to many other superbly mounted costume dramas backed by the BBC, but this one has a special distinction: it chronicles the horrors that World War I inflicted on a generation of young English people...

  • Audience Reviews for Testament Of Youth. Once again, the wonderful Emily Watson, in the role of the mother, provides key turning points in the story, within just seconds of footage. Vikander plays Vera with a pleasing neutrality, that throws the action and the characters of the story up into relief.

  • Testament of Youth review - Vera Brittain's not so lovely war. They have another modest friend Geoffrey (Jonathan Bailey), with pacifist leanings: all four men are heading for the front. Their emotional intensities have an Arcadian innocence in peacetime, but all the vows and railway-station farewells lose their meaning once the men have experienced the horror of the trenches.

  • Summary: Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and remembrance, based on the First World War memoir by Vera Brittain, which has become the classic testimony of that war from a woman's point of view.

  • User Reviews. Testament of Youth is about lost youth and how war achieves nothing at all. Hundreds of thousands of brilliant young people were lost in the two great wars, not to forget the countless wars of history. We are still in the midst of war even in the 21st century - thanks to politics and greed and madness of humanity.

  • Overall I enjoyed Testament of Youth. I appreciated the author's sincerity and dedication and this personal view of WWI history. Ms Brittain's writing reveals her intelligence, intensity, and large vocabulary, and I was glad I read the book on Kindle so I could easily look up words new to me.

  • Review: ‘Testament of Youth’ Recalls the Great War With Little NostalgiaReview: ‘Testament of Youth’ Recalls the Great War With Little Nostalgia. All this is viewed through the eyes of Vera, portrayed by the Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina,” “Ex Machina”), who gives her character a purposeful edge of impatience and bitterness.

  • TESTAMENT OF YOUTH is based on the late British writer and pacifist Vera Brittain's ( Alicia Vikander) memoir about her experiences as an Oxford student-turned-war nurse during World War I. The movie opens on Armistice Day in 1918 and then flashes back four years to 1914, a breezier time when the most dire thing on Vera's mind was...

  • Once or twice, in her glorious performance as Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth, you can hear a telltale Scandinavian vowel drop. But you shouldn’t hold that against her.

  • Community Reviews. Testament of Youth was a best seller when it was first published in 1933, and became a bestseller once again in the 1970s. It is every bit as good as I'd remembered when I read it first about twenty years ago. Vera Brittain's lively intelligence, determination, bravery and passion all shine through.
