  • The Magnificent Seven is a summer blockbuster snuck into the early weeks of Oscar movie season, a fun two-hour-plus action adventure film that at least embraces the spirit of the Western even if it can't replicate it.

  • Critic Reviews for The Magnificent Seven All Critics (280) | Top Critics (47) | Fresh (176) | Rotten (104) As things build toward the long, bloody and by-the-numbers (if ably staged) showdown, it's hard not to mourn for the film this could have been, considering the assemblage of talent.

  • The dialogue references concepts like righteousness and justice but there’s little sincerity in any of it. Part of the problem is also that “The Magnificent Seven” feels like a modern summer blockbuster as much as it does an ode to the Akira Kurosawa film.

  • The Magnificent Seven was a really good movie. Almost everything, from the acting to the action to the story was all entertaining and a joy to watch. The only thing that keeps this movie down at all is that it is very predictable, with no surprises even for someone who hasn't seen the The Magnificent Seven was a really good movie.

  • Mr. Washington’s latest, “The Magnificent Seven,” is a remake of a remake that’s as fresh as recycled recycling suggests. Its principal source is the 1960 film of the same title about a septet of hired American guns protecting a Mexican village.

  • Denzel Washington in The Magnificent Seven. Photograph: Sam Emerson/AP T his week’s imagination failure comes to you via the old west, with Antoine Fuqua’s heavy-handed and joyless remake of the John Sturges 1960 classic The Magnificent Seven, which had a handful of follow-ups and was itself of course a remake of Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
