The Divine Order Movie Overview

Nora is a young housewife and mother, living in a quaint little village with her husband and their two sons. The Swiss countryside is untouched by the major social upheavals the movement of 1968 has brought about. Nora’s life is not affected either; she is a quiet person who is liked by everybody – until she starts to publicly fight for women’s suffrage, which the men are due to vote on in a ballot on February 7, 1971.

  • “The Divine Order” examines that fight for women’s suffrage in a microcosm. Directed by Petra Volpe, the film is set in a conservative Swiss town that has gone largely insulated from the spirit of the swinging ’60s.

  • Reviews; April 25, 2017 11:10PM PT Tribeca Film Review: ‘The Divine Order’ A housewife rebels against sexism by leading the fight for women’s suffrage in 1971 Switzerland in Petra Volpe’s feel-good drama.

  • “The Divine Order” isn’t particularly complicated, but how complicated does a film about the need for women’s suffrage really need to be?

  • Critic Reviews for The Divine Order (Die göttliche Ordnung) All Critics (33) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (28) | Rotten (5) Leuenberger brings a vulnerability and defiance to Nora that elevates the film past dogma or sentimentality.

  • Summary: The Divine Order is the story of Nora, an agreeably submissive and seemingly unremarkable young housewife living in a small village in Switzerland in 1971, as the rest of the world is changing and women there still don't have the right to vote.

  • The most pleasurable part of watching this Nora’s story is seeing how the men in her life have to make room for her, and do some learning themselves.

  • The Divine Order is Switzerland's submission in the foreign-language Oscar category and made around $4.5 million at home, an impressive number for the small country.
