  • The Last Samurai is an idyll in which the savageries of existence are transcended by spiritual devotion. That's a beautiful dream, and it gives the film a deep pleasingness, but the fullness of life and its blackest ambiguities are sacrificed.

  • "The Last Samurai" has greatness in it, but sidesteps the ending that would have given it real impact. If there's going to be an alternative ending on the DVD, I know what it would have to show -- and so, I suspect, does Edward Zwick.

  • The Last Samurai is an idyll in which the savageries of existence are transcended by spiritual devotion. That’s a beautiful dream, and it gives the film a deep pleasingness, but the fullness of life and its blackest ambiguities are sacrificed.

  • The Last Samurai is a brilliantly crafted aesthetic pleasure, studded with supernal performances from Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise. In fact, Tom Cruise unarguably gives his best ever performance, surpassing his portrayal of Jerry Maguire in the eponymous flick.

  • THE LAST SAMURAI is a superb novel. The author, Helen DeWitt, makes two heroes: the headstrong, unafraid, charismatic Sibylla, and her genius son. The son is sometimes called Ludoviticus, somtimes Ludo, sometimes (for the sake of the Outside and Stupid World) called Steven or David.

  • Movie The Last Samurai American Captain Nathan Algren, haunted by his role in the Indian Campaigns, is recruited to train an army fighting the 1877 samurai rebellion in Japan. But when captured by samurai leader Katsumoto, he embarks on a journey of redemption.

  • Recent films about samurai have investigated peripheral or heterodox aspects of their culture; Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays a warrior here, stars in the forthcoming (and excellent) movie Twilight Samurai by Yoji Yamada, about a widower and petty swordsman drawn into violence.

  • Mostly, though, The Last Samurai aims for, and achieves, epic sweep: the glory of tradition-bound warriors hurling themselves against the modern world, the grandeur of Hollywood offering two points of view on everything.

  • THE LAST SAMURAI centers on Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a Civil War veteran irredeemably corrupted by wartime atrocities and devoid of honor. When he is offered a job to train Japanese soldiers in modern fighting techniques, he does not care whose side he will be on.
